Walter Welford papers, 1901-1939.

Consists of Welford's oath of office, wedding announcement, marriage certificate, passport, a medal, ribbon, newspaper clippings, postcards, and photographs. Welford served as the twentieth Governor of North Dakota, 1935-1937, after Thomas Moodie was disqualified. Welford was a member of the North Dakota State House of Representatives, 1906 & 1908, served in the North Dakota State Senate, 1916 & 1918, and was Lieutenant Governor of North Dakota in 1934.

Walter E. Welford was born May 21, 1868, in Bellery, Yorkshire, England, to Thomas and Jane (Murry) Welford. Walter immigrated with his parents to Emerson, Manitoba in November 1879, and settled in Dakota Territory in early 1880. He lived in the Pembina-Neche area until his death, and operated a 1,500 acre farm. On June 26, 1901, he married Edith Bachman in Genoa, OH.
